Blue Chambray Shirt: Denim’s Softer Cousin
There was a phase during my university days when denim and chambray pieces were all the rage. Shirts, crop tops, bandeaus, you name it. I dig blue shirts and would wear them alone, under cable knits, as an open jacket, slung over my shoulders… The possibilities were endless. But after I retired my last shirt (it got very frayed) I’ve just forgotten about them.
While we’re on the topic of chambray, is it just me or are most people confused about whether chambray is a subcategory of denim? Chambray is often mistaken for denim as they are both cotton fabrics made up of two different yarns, typically an indigo warp and a white weft. The difference, however, turns out to be in their fabric construction.
Denim is constructed in a twill weave, with multiple strands of yarn woven together. The result is a thicker, sturdier fabric which gives a more rugged appeal. On the other hand, chambray is constructed in a plain weave, with single strands of yarn woven together. The resulting fabric is thinner with an airy feel, making for a perfect spring fabric.
Because of their softness, light blue chambray can sometimes look a little too lived in and may fade to a very pale shade with repeated washing. I was thrilled to find this chambray shirt in a muted mid-blue colour which combines the down-to-earth quality of denim with the comfort and familiarity of a lived-in shirt.
