Moist Diane Extra Damage Repair Shampoo and Treatment: My Favourite Drugstore Duo

Most of my school years were spent testing my share of Japanese drugstore shampoos, which have cute branding or promise magical results. And since I struggled to find one that performed consistently, I kept hopping from one brand to the next.

You probably recognise Moist Diane for its packaging, as it’s commonly found in local drugstores and supermarket e-stores. So naturally, I expected Moist Diane to be regular drugstore brands that you test out and never go back to, but wow, can I say I’m blown away? Moist Diane is the most all-rounded drugstore shampoo/conditioner duo I’ve encountered, from its aesthetics to its ingredients and results. Retailing around HKD160 (USD20) per set doesn’t hurt your wallet either. Read until the end for detailed ingredient and feature highlights.

The entire line of Moist Diane products comes in its signature fragrance-like bottles, which elevates the brand and is a nod to its heavenly scent. Out of all the products I’ve tried in the range, the smell of the Extra Damage Repair line is my favourite. It has a full-bodied sweetness from floral and berry notes that I love wearing all day – minus the overpowering scent that gives me a headache.

I always shampoo twice to remove any product buildup on my hair. Moist Diane’s shampoos lather well and keep my scalp feeling fresh without stripping it of its natural moisture. I have naturally wavy hair, which, combined with Hong Kong’s constant humidity, is a recipe for hair disaster. I love that the Extra Damage Repair products leave my hair noticeably less frizzy without weighing it down. There’s also a hair mask from the same line, but I found it more or less the same as the conditioner, so I usually go without it.

Since working from home, I’ve styled my hair a lot less, returning much of its natural softness. Still, having extra manageable hair that is a delight to run my fingers through doesn’t hurt!

I still test out other shampoos occasionally, but I always stock a bottle of Moist Diane at home as a fail-safe backup. The only bummer is that Moist Diane doesn’t offer travel-sized products and its environmentally-friendly refill packs are unavailable in Hong Kong. I found out that Amazon Japan stocks them (for a fraction of the bottle price), so I might order them online going forward.

Moist Diane

  • Silicone and sulphate-free

  • A mixture of organic botanical oils to penetrate deep into the hair shaft (argan oil, sapote oil, baobab oil, prune oil, mango oil, andiroba oil, marula oil, cupuacu butter)

Extra Damage Repair line

  • Amino keratin to repair permed and bleached hair by smoothing gaps in the damaged hair cuticles

  • Cactus oil for moisture retention to prevent split ends and breakage

Editor’s note: I love the moisturising texture and smell of the conditioner so much, that I sometimes use it as shaving cream for my legs. That’s how good it is.
