FANCL White Advance: Brightening From the Inside and Out

Hong Kongers will be very familiar with FANCL’s iconic “Less is More” jingle and its zero preservatives guarantee.

Then there’s their Mild Cleansing Oil, one of the first of its kind, and the Tense Up beauty drink focused on replenishing collagen. Less known, though, is their whitening range, which encompasses oral supplements in addition to skincare products.

FANCL

As with many established Japanese brands, FANCL has nailed their niche and rarely follows fads to release seasonal products.

Since 1980, FANCL has been bent on tackling allergies and skin irritation arising from using beauty products. Their answer was to create quality skincare products without preservatives or other chemical additives that consumers could use worry-free to foster long-lasting, healthy skin. What sounds like an impossible feat is actually hugely reliant on their three principles:

  1. Small bottle designs — Although skincare products are best consumed within 60 days of opening, most are packaged in large bottles, prone to contamination and oxidation, resulting in nutrient loss and deteriorating effects. FANCL products are packed in small bottles to ensure freshness after opening until the last drop.

  2. Properly sealed packaging — The preservation period for skincare products without a sealed design should be counted from their production time when they come into contact with air instead of when consumers open the bottle. FANCL takes the extra step of sealing, packaging, and sterilising products at high temperatures to preserve them more efficiently (without preservatives).

  3. Explicit production dates — Manufacturing dates are printed immediately and without ambiguity following the sealing and packaging stages, making it easy for consumers to identify the golden period to enjoy their purchases more effectively.

The fresher the food, the higher its nutritional value and the more benefits for the body; the same holds true for skin care products, whose fresh, active ingredients can bring out the best in our skin.

White Advance Drink

It’s not an exaggeration to say I thrive under the sun; having that abundant light brings joy to my day and does so for my mood. And I’m not crazy about chasing that fair, porcelain skin the Chinese and Koreans love; I do love a good tanning sesh during summer, but freckles and discolouration… not so much.

It’s been bugging me big time since I amped up on rugby training, and I noticed a slowdown in fading away stubborn spots since entering my thirties. In short, it was time for some pizzazz on top of my existing skincare and face treatments.

The best way to achieve bright, glowy skin is to brighten from inside and out, precisely what the FANCL White Advance Drink does. Each 30mL bottle is packed chock-full with a Japanese-patented formula and brightening ingredients:

  • Japanese-patented combo of olive leaf extract and L-cystine: Exerts dual brightening power to block melanin from its roots while increasing skin metabolism and fading dark spots

  • Artichoke essence: Fights off melanin from its roots and comprehensively prevents pigmentation

  • Pineapple essence: Moisturises, repairs dryness and dullness caused by ultraviolet light, and improves skin's hydration and transparency

  • Complete antioxidant formula: Blocks free radicals caused by ultraviolet light damage, protecting collagen and fighting skin ageing

These ingredients offer three benefits in a bottle: lightening dark spots, improving existing pigmentation, and preventing photoaging. Did you know that dull skin contains more melanin, whereas rosy, translucent skin has more pheomelanin, a “white pigment”? Melanin and oxidants are the biggest culprits to uneven skin tones, so reducing melanin production while fighting pigmentation goes hand in hand with eradicating the problem from its roots. Bear in mind that this is in no way a replacement for your daily SPF and skincare routine. But with regular intake, it will act as a supplement to foster radiant, glowing skin that is less prone to pigment accumulation or tanning.

For girlies who do laser facials regularly, you know that prolonged sun exposure may cause pesky post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation that leaves your skin even worse. The White Advance Drink is especially effective in preventing rebound, just like a full-body brightening mask, but without the hassle.

I’m slightly embarrassed to admit I have a terrible track record of taking my supplements every day. If they leave a weird aftertaste or are impossibly big to swallow, I probably will shy away from them. Surprisingly, the White Advance Drink tastes much more appetising than other Japanese beauty drinks (mind you, I’ve tried my share of them) that just feels like grapefruit juice (and not the horribly bitter kinds either). Just one bottle after breakfast goes a long way in fading sun spots and improving dullness.

Each pack contains a 10-day supply, and you can get 12 packs for 9 at any FANCL store, so now’s a great time to get started before summer kicks in!

Even if beauty drinks aren’t your thing, FANCL also offers a tablet version of the White Advance. The ingredients are almost identical, though the drink version is supposedly more potent. The daily dosage is 2 tablets after meals 3 times daily, and a pack of 180 tablets will last you through the month.

So this summer: hello, glowing skin; goodbye, pigmentation.
