Holiday Gift Kits: Now Screening at Aesop

We are, yet again, drawing perilously close to the holiday season.

Window installations have begun to shimmer, overwhelming shoppers who can’t make up their minds on what to fill their baskets with. The bigger question is, what are you getting for _____ (insert name of tasteful person) this Christmas?

Film is a medium that has influenced everything from the formulation of certain Aesop products to the design of many store environments. Examples include Breathless, a hydrating body oil named after a particular New Wave masterpiece; collaborative film projects with emerging talents; stores in London and Rome were designed in partnership with Luca Guadagnino, along with many other Aesop spaces directly influenced by different genres or specific filmsβ€”for example, Aesop Knox, which features a projection of Paris, Texas on repeat or Aesop Chengdu Shuangliu Airport, which seems right out of a 1960s sci-fi epic.

As Aesop’s gift offering comes into the spotlight, so do the brand’s connections with the arts that continue to nourish, shape and stimulate its distinctly unorthodox character.

The Campaign

A while ago, I had the pleasure of attending Aesop’s outdoor viewing of β€˜The Monk and the Gun’ at Tai Kwun in collaboration with the Hong Kong Asian Film Festival. It was splendidly written and shot (you need to see it), with the sprawling Bhutanese landscape a perfect backdrop for VirΔ“re, Aesop’s latest fragrance with radiant notes of fig and green tea. The brand also premiered its quirky, atmospheric short film β€˜The Soap Service’, which depicts gift-giving moments, merging the worlds of scent and celluloid. Truly one of the most fun experiences I’ve had this year, and I don’t say that lightly.

Drawing on this enduring influence of the cinema, a trio of limited-release gift kits offer gestures of blockbuster or more humble proportions. β€˜Screen 1’ includes a quartet of formulations for the hands and home, β€˜Screen 2 ’ is a sprightly trilogy of products from the Geranium Leaf range and β€˜Screen 3’ provides a three-part saga for the hands and body.

The Gift Kit

This year, Aesop’s gift kit packaging draws on the glitches, light leaks and scratches that feature on well-worn celluloid, realised in painterly, colourful designs that echo the materiality of film. As always, the present paper sleeve and cardboard boxβ€”inserts includedβ€”are all made from recycled and recyclable materials.

In Screen 2, the geranium leaf (one of my favourite body care ranges ever) takes a leading role, with a trio of formulations to cleanse, gently exfoliate and replenish the skin from neck to toe. Characterised by their green, fresh and citrus aroma, geranium leaf formulations are ideal for those who prefer uplifting sprightly notes during their daily bathroom montage.
