UNIQLO Souffle Yarn: Deliciously Soft for Cooler Days
The weather in Hong Kong has recently become bizarre. We’ve had a week of crisp air and gorgeous sunsets with the temperature finally dipping to the lower twenties; then we’re back to typhoon weather and full-on rainstorms out of nowhere. And I think my wardrobe has just been as confused as I have.
The silver lining is that I enjoy mixing pieces from different seasons in this transitional weather. UNIQLO recently sent over a jumper from their souffle yarn range in a delicate shade of sage green and I couldn’t wait to style it with my matching See by Chloé bag, some black denim shorts and heeled thong sandals.
Unlike UNIQLO’s longstanding ranges of pure cotton, merino wool or cashmere, the souffle yarn is a synthetic fibre developed specifically for a soft feel that hugs you like a warm blanket. The yarn core made of stretchable polyurethane is wrapped with different materials and knitted at a particular density to create an airy, less irritating fabric (hence the name). And while it contains acrylic, it’s springy and soft without the plasticky feeling or static of traditional synthetic fibres.
The pieces generally run in a relaxed silhouette, and I wear my usual size S for UNIQLO’s knitwear. Even so, there was quite a bit of material, and the pillowy texture made it harder to tuck into rigid bottoms fully. As the back hem is slightly longer, I settled for a half tuck, though I imagine it would be the perfect length to go over black leggings.
UNIQLO has substantially expanded their souffle yarn knitwear, which now covers classic crewneck jumpers and cardigans, mock necks, vests and even unisex half-zips. I prefer the souffle yarn to their traditional lambswool, which feels a lot denser and is more prone to shrinkage after washing. It does, however, pill after a few wears, so you’ll need a fabric shaver to keep it looking fresh.
