Shirred Tees for Lightweight Textures
Hi! I know I haven’t been active on the blog with sharing outfit snaps. We’ve had a torrent of nasty, borderline psycho weather here. The sun could be shining for one moment, and by the time I’ve put on sunscreen, there’s already a downpour outside. It doesn’t help that temperatures have been sizzling, with days starting upwards of 30 degrees. Sickly temperatures call for airy neutrals, and I’ve turned to the new releases at UNIQLO. Everyone knows I’m a sucker for their basic tees, and the new shirred version is a fun twist to classic summer pieces.
Truthfully, I have mixed feelings about shirred or smocked pieces. More often than not, they end up looking dated or, worse, trap heat and moisture so badly in Asian summers that they become unbearable. But UNIQLO has nailed it with a stretchy cotton blend fabric in a classic slim fit, similar to their supima tee. The smocking adds a hint of texture that still feels weightless against the skin–perfect for darting in and out of Hong Kong’s notorious air-conditioned spaces. I like how the beige highlights the subtle texture that may otherwise get lost in a bright white or dark black; a light cool grey does the trick, too. Just throw on some creamy whites (and sunnies) to go with it, and you’re ready to brave the weather. Just don’t forget to bring an umbrella like I often do.
