Glowing eggs against the glittering Hong Kong skyline? Yes, please.

The massive teamLab installation on Victoria Harbour has been ongoing for some time now, and we finally had time to check it out before we left for the UK.

teamLab

teamLab is practically synonymous with light installations. Since it was founded in 2001, it has grown an international footprint, with crowds flocking to its seasonal and permanent exhibitions. They have an enchanting, soft quality, where light and colours become fluid, melding seamlessly into one another.

teamLab: Continuous

The Resonating series has debuted in other installations with trees, floating orbs, and fluid amoebas. As part of the government’s Art@Harbour 2024 efforts, teamLab: Continuous returns to Victoria Harbour through glowing eggs (Resonating Life which Continues to Stand) and dimly-lit trees (Resonating Trees) that respond to the environment.

Its unique location occupies a long strip extending from Tamar Park onto the promenade boardwalk and spilling onto the water. During the day, the hundreds of white ovoids stand like a spread-out nest of dinosaur eggs, refusing to topple onto their sides; in the evening, they transform into glowing ombres set against a glittering backdrop of skyscrapers and a bespoke soundtrack by Hideaki Takahashi, a long-time collaborator with teamLab. They almost resemble comical fruits in all their alluring, ever-changing hues, at times mangoes, plums, and berries ripe for picking.

When all is still, the ovoids gently flicker, beckoning to any passerby. But when they are pushed–yes, they are meant to be interacted with–they light up and produce a tone that spreads to neighbouring ovoids and signifies the presence of an audience. Unlike most art, where you may wish to observe in solitude, teamLab instils a sense of childlike wonder by bringing viewers together with immersive installations.

teamLab exhibitions have always been notoriously hard to book and a little pricey. So here’s your chance to cosy up to the giant eggs as they disappear before the summer typhoon season hits! Until 8 June 2024, entry is free for all.
