These Mustard Jeans Turned out to be my Favourite Piece from the Uniqlo x Marni Collab
I only had my eye on two pieces for this collection: the baggy jeans and a Japanese furoshiki scarf made of pure silk. The baggy jeans come in a vibrant mustard or cobalt shade for maximum colour-blocking effect and are one of Francesco Risso’s favourite pieces from the collection.

Sizing
UNIQLO claims the baggy jeans are meant to be mid-rise and worn loose, but I found them to be way too oversized. My regular size (25) was falling off my hips, and I had to size down not one but two sizes (23). Once I did, the pockets and inseam fit perfectly.
The inseam is on the longer side (30”), so I don’t think they will work with flats for me (I’m 5’6”). As with most of UNIQLO’s trousers, alteration service is available for an extra charge.
The last time I wore UNIQLO jeans was when jeggings were still all the rage years ago. True to its name, the baggy jeans carry a lot of volume at the hem. The extra-long inseam (at least for Asians) at 30” produces a flattering cut that falls straight from the hips. It’s instant all-day comfort without sacrificing style, and I can even sneak in HEATTECH warmers underneath.
A common issue I have with rigid denim is too much fabric around the torso to compensate for the lack of give. This doesn’t apply to UNIQLO’s baggy jeans, though, as the cotton denim is soft (but not flimsy), and UNIQLO just does a great job at nailing Asian fits. The jeans also come with front buttons, zippers, rivets and leather patches exclusive to the collab.
Cut-aside, the most striking feature of these jeans is the mustard yellow shade. It’s an unapologetic shade that oozes MARNI vibes while still being wearable enough to mix and match with existing pieces. If you’re shy of colours, mustard yellow is a great start to add a touch of colour to your shoulder season wardrobe. It’s easy to pair with florals and pastels for spring and works just as well with richer neutrals for fall.
For accessories, I added a brown belt and tortoiseshell sunnies for a darker anchor. The belt also draws the eye towards the natural waist and makes the leather patch pop at the back. The Chloé bag in patent leather is a perennial favourite of mine, with its caramel tone drawing out the brighter yellow of the jeans.
I opted for low-profile sneakers in a warm white shade to maximise the leg-lengthening effect. These velcro court shoes from Everlane are perfect for that retro touch, though I imagine my trusty Converse All Stars would work just as well.
I loved this look, mainly how the browns and whites spread out at varying heights to create a cohesive colour tone. It’s always exciting to discover permanent pieces by brands I love, reimagined in playful ways. The collab has functional pieces that are both out-there yet very wearable, and the denim was definitely a sound purchase. I’m seriously considering buying another pair in their light blue wash for the summer months.
