Rainbow Iridescent Nails: Inspired by Pride Flag Colours

It’s been a while since I shared what’s been going on with my fingertips. You might remember my glass candy nails from last year that paid homage to the pride flag; this year was no different!

With a colour palette corresponding to the six colours of the pride flag, we deliberately picked candy-coloured pastels for a more summery feel, paired with a translucent white for the remaining nails. To spice things up, we added mermaid powder on top for a pearlescent sheen and holographic strips on the white nails for that shattered glass effect. The white nails would look so chic as a nail set on their own!

As we reach the end of LGBTQ Pride Month, I also wanted to chat a bit about the pride flag we’re familiar with – did you know that it dates back to 1978 and had different colour stripes then?

It started with Harvey Milk, one of the first openly gay officials in the United States. He urged Gilbert Baker, an openly gay artist and drag queen, to create a symbol of pride for the gay community. Baker opted for a flag because he saw it as a powerful symbol of pride combined with the colours of the rainbow, which he saw as a natural flag from the sky.

The first version of the flag had eight colours, each with its own meaning:

  • Hot pink for sex

  • Red for life

  • Orange for healing

  • Yellow for sunlight

  • Green for nature

  • Turquoise for art

  • Indigo for harmony

  • Violet for spirit

First flown for the San Francisco parade, the pink and turquoise stripes were later removed due to difficulties with mass production. The resulting contemporary flag (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet) reflects the universal diversity and unity of the LGBTQ community. Variations have popped up throughout the year to bring different values to the forefront, such as peace and social justice. Still, the six-striped flag remains the most common version.
